Implanon Insertion and Removal
We can assist you with your contraceptive needs, including the insertion and removal of Implanon. Implanon is a small plastic contraceptive rod that is inserted under the skin on the inside of the arm to slowly release progestogen, providing a 99.9% effectiveness rate as a birth control method for up to three years. GP's at Healthy Haven Family Clinic have completed specific training to carry out the Implanon insertion procedure. We serve the communities of Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Truganina, Williams Landing, Tarniet, Point Cook and Wyndham Vale.
Understanding Implanon: a long-acting contraceptive implant to prevent pregnancy
Implanon is a reversible contraceptive implant that provides up to three years of effective birth control and is suitable for a wide range of women, including those who are breastfeeding.
Implanon insertion is a quick, typically pain-free procedure performed under local anaesthesia.
Implanon operates by releasing the hormone etonogestrel, which inhibits ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and thins the uterine lining, all with the goal of preventing pregnancy.
Implanon Insertion - what to expect
If it's your first time getting Implanon, you'll need to book an initial consultation with your GP to discuss whether this contraceptive implant is an appropriate birth control method for you, the potential side effects and what to expect during the insertion procedure. You'll receive a script for the Implanon device so you can purchase it prior to your Implanon insertion appointment.
Preparing for Your Appointment
The procedure can be booked at any time during your menstrual cycle.
During the Insertion
Your GP will give you an injection of local anaesthetic to numb your upper arm, where the implant will be placed. Implanon is then inserted into the upper arm, and a dressing used to cover the area.
Post-Insertion Care
After the implant is in place, your GP will guide you through post-insertion aftercare. Keeping the site dry and clean in the first few days is essential for healing.
Side effects of Implanon
As with most forms of contraception, Implanon may cause side effects in some patients and may result in changes to menstrual bleeding patterns. Some may find their periods become lighter, less frequent, or even absent, while others may experience more frequent or prolonged bleeding. These shifts in bleeding are a direct result of the implant’s hormonal influence on the lining of the uterus. Other side effects may include:
- Headaches
- Mood swings
- Breast tenderness
Consult your doctor if you experience side effects from Implanon.
Replacing Implanon
The implant should be replaced after 3 years. If replacement is carried out prior to the expiry date, the contraceptive effects will remain. If the implant exceeds the 3 year period, you are at risk of becoming pregnant. If you don’t plan to replace the rod, you should book an Implanon removal at the end of the 3 years.
Implanon removal: what to expect
Removal of Implanon is a straightforward process. A local anaesthetic is injected into the skin, and a tiny incision made to retrieve the implant. The procedure is fast, often taking only a few minutes. Post-removal, a brief period of tenderness in the area is expected.
